your better off if your unexperienced to give a couple light coats. Put it on across the ceiling anyway but as even as possible. Then go back and run the knife over it again to smooth it out. Then go back again twice and hold the knife tight to the edges to clean them. if you dont clean the edges you'll be sanding for a month... You should try to find a finish man or get a drywall book i know home dope and lowes have them. Start with an 8 " knife if you use paper tape or a 10" knife if you use fibergl self stick tape. Finish with a 12" knife on the flats and bring the joints out to 24" 12" knife on each side... REMEMBER TO CLEAN THE EDGES!!! Cant say that enough
