What's the diff bet. autism and retardation?

How exactly is autism diagnosed? Are there categories or degrees of severity and how are they determined? What's the difference between autistic person and a slow learner? My preschooler has utmost difficulty in school or plainly whenever he's being taught. He has huge problems with comprehension and following directions. And after a few minutes he complains of severe headache.
