Is the surname Koczan Ukrainian?

My grandfather was born somewhere in the Lviv Oblast in Ukraine. I do understand that the Lviv Oblast was part of Poland for a long time, but I learned that most Poles lived in large cities in that area. My grandfather was born outside of Lviv in a much smaller village. I am wondering if he was Ukrainian and if isnt what was his ethincity.
